Job Summary:

Occupational Health Nurse

Responsible for performing quality occupational health care within the scope of professional nursing. Has knowledge of company standards, federally mandated exams, and regulatory agencies to as certain the fitness of an employee to perform job duties. Coordinates, and implements occupational health programs and health assets for CITGO employees.

Sr. Occupational Health Nurse

Administers quality, comprehensive occupational health services within the scope of professional nursing. Interprets and ensures compliance with laws, regulations and standards governing health and safety of employees. Knowledgeable of company standards and government mandates to ascertain the fitness of an employee to perform the job duties. Coordinates and manages occupational health programs and health assets for CITGO employees.

Minimum Qualifications:

Occupational Health Nurse

Degree:

  • College Degree (Bachelors Level) in Nursing.

The minimum number of years of job related experience required by this job is:

  • 1 year previous experience as a RN in occupational health, ER, urgent care, outpatient facility or school nursing helpful.

List any specialized training or unique skills required:

  • State Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • CPR/AED Certification Preferred.
  • Audiometric Certification Preferred.
  • Spirometry Certification Preferred.
  • Breath Alcohol Certification Preferred.
  • Interest in or current knowledge of occupational health nursing practice, and CITGO policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work toward assigned goals without supervision.

Sr. Occupational Health Nurse

Degree:

  • College Degree (Bachelors Level).

The minimum number of years of job related experience required by this job is:

  • Requires 3 years as an Occupational Health Nurse in an industrial setting or the equivalent demonstrated proficiency in a similar role.

List any specialized training or unique skills required:

  • TX State Professional Nurse License
  • Occupational Health Nurse Certification (COHN-S). *
  • CPR Certification. *
  • Audiometric Certification. *
  • Spirometry Certification. *
  • Breath Alcohol Technician Certification. *
  • Able to work toward assigned goals without supervision.
  • Computer skills: e-mail, Word, Excel, HMS or comparable.

Note: * If candidate does not have certification at time of hire, they must receive certification within 1 year from date of hire.

Job Duties:

Occupational Health Nurse

  1. Provide continual support of complex safety goals by maintaining and improving employee health; support emergency activities.
  2. Administer professional medical care, including emergency care (occupational and non-occupational) and personal consults and referrals.
  3. Complete federally mandated exams and medical surveillance as determined by industrial hygiene monitoring.
  4. Ascertain fitness for duty in employees to ensure safe work performance.
  5. Furnish weekly monitoring of employees off with personal illness/injury; including coordination of transitional duty and home visits to facilitate timely return to work.
  6. Assist with on going testing of Federal and Company drug/alcohol program (includes administering urine drug screen collections; breath alcohol testing; notification of employees; documentation of notifications; monitoring and filing of results; follow-up of test results; follow-up with self-reporting programs, as needed/assigned).
  7. Ensure health services inventory of supplies/stock.
  8. Assume system of authority for manger of Health Services and takes after hour call for occupational injury and/or incident, as deemed necessary.

  9. Administrative duties (i.e., assist with reception duties; filing; opening/dispersing mail; preparing correspondence; communicating with employees, payroll, supervisors/managers, other internal/external customers/vendors; making follow-up phone calls; archiving of employee medical records, maintenance, and preparation of reports/logs; ordering and stocking of medical/office supplies; research information; and/or other duties, as assigned.

  10. Assist with health promotion activities and employee education programs.

  11. Ensure professional, confidential documentation of all aspects of health services.

Sr. Occupational Health Nurse

  1. Administers clinical and primary medical care including assessment, nursing diagnosis, management and documentation of occupational and non-occupational illness and injury. This can include collaboration with the treating physician, Industrial Hygienist, employees direct Supervisor, and Human Resources.
  2. Directs federally mandated medical surveillance testing and examinations performed by contract employees. Analyzes all results, determining need for referrals for further medical care by outside medical providers. Reviews reports with employee and advises employee on further medical care based on the results.
  3. Provides case management for occupational and non-occupational illnesses and injuries ensuring compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations. Collaborates with the outside medical provider and the employee in determining employees ability to return to work, modified duty, or disability. Reports disability status to management for purposes of planning for temporary employees, scheduling of overtime or shifting of duties. Functions as a Consultant to Human Resources and Management in workers compensation claims.
  4. Ascertain fitness-for-duty of employees at the Refinery to determine ability to maintain safe work performance. Approves all employees return to work following a medical leave of absence. Collaborates with Corporate MD on cases with potential for significant impact. Determines fitness for duty for all new hires.
  5. Coordinates and conducts drug and alcohol testing on 50% of the employee population per year, ensuring it is consistent with CITGO and DOT standards. Maintains Breath Alcohol Technician certification. Ensures testing equipment is in compliance with DOT calibration requirements and is in functional, working order.
  6. Provide consultation, counseling, referrals and health education for employees. Analyzes testing data to develop health promotion programs and disease prevention strategies.
  7. Determines the need and select the outside medical service providers to provide off site medical services. Develops and promotes relationship of company with the local health care providers.
  8. Assume system of authority for manger of Health Services and takes after hour call for occupational injury and/or incident, as deemed necessary.

  9. Ensure professional, confidential documentation of all aspects of Health Services.
